Around 6,000 runners donned their best fancy dress costumes, which included inflatable unicorns and pink fairies.

The event saw participants, each with their own story to tell, complete either a 3k, 5k or 10k run to raise vital funds which will go towards the charity's research to beat cancer.

Around 6,000 runners donned their best fancy dress costumes, which included inflatable unicorns and pink fairies. Two women who became friends after being diagnosed with cancer within weeks of each other were chosen to launch today's Race for Life. Alison Garven and Kirsty Ogilvie were guests of honour at the event, sounding the starter horn together to send thousands of participants on the 3k and 5k courses at Glasgow Green.

It was a special moment for the pair, who are both now cancer-free but have inherited a faulty version of a gene called BRCA1, increasing their risks of some cancers. They first struck up a strong connection after meeting through the BRCA+ Chat support group, bonding over shared experiences during the toughest year of their lives. Alison, 54, from Newton Mearns, said: “I felt incredibly proud to stand together on the start line with Kirsty to launch Race for Life.

“Kirsty came into my life at exactly the right time. Our friendship meant there was someone there for me who completely understood what I was going through, the treatment, the decisions, the fears. I remember just days after having surgery last year I was at Race for Life Glasgow, cheering my amazing sister Suzanne on as she crossed the finish line. What a difference a year makes.

It feels brilliant to be back for 2026, to feel well and to actually have taken part this year. I want to give something back to help people going through cancer right now and for those who may face it in the future. ” Kirsty, 44, added: “I had brilliant support from my family, friends and medical staff but cancer took a lot away from me.

“I remember my hair started to fall out over Christmas time, then on New Year’s day, I decided to take back some control and shave the rest of it off. Meeting Alison made a huge difference and continues to do so. There’s something powerful about chatting to and messaging someone who has walked the same path. Alison became my fellow BRCA buddy and warrior.

When she asked me if I wanted to join her at Race for Life Glasgow, it was an easy yes. It’s a perfect chance to raise funds towards research that will hopefully help the next person. ” A group of 40 teenage cadets from Air Training Corps from Paisley, Johnstone, Castlemilk and Oban were at the finish line to give out medals to all. A whopping £642,321 was raised for Cancer Research UK.

Members of the Rock Choir and the ScottishPower pipe band were also in attendance, keeping participants entertained throughout the route. Lisa Adams, Cancer Research UK’s spokeswoman in Scotland, said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part in Race for Life Glasgow.

“Sadly nearly 1 in 2 of us will get cancer in our lifetime**** but all of us can support the research that will beat it. We’re proud that Race for Life has had such a positive impact. Every pound raised supports our life-saving work, which has helped double cancer survival in the UK over the last 50 years.

“Race for Life powers progress and it relies on a whole community of people coming together, united by a common purpose to beat cancer. “It was a special day as people came together to celebrate the lives of those dear to them who have survived cancer and to remember loved ones lost to the disease. “Now we’re asking everyone who took part to return the money they’re raised as soon as possible.

Every donation, every pound raised will make a real difference and help people live longer, better lives free from the fear of cancer. ”The 30-year-old was convicted of a number of offences on Thursday, following a trial at Falkirk Sheriff Court. Paul Gorman, 52, who was a taxi driver at the time, befriended the girl and offered her cash to supply the pictures, which she took on a mobile phone in toilets at her school.

Marshall O'Hara, 21, Fraser Stewart, 22, and Aiden McLaughlin, 21, targeted houses and a carpet firm linked to the Daniel crime family. Rachel's partner, Scottish football star Graham Carey, announced her tragic death this week and she has been described as the "perfect soul" as tributes flood in.
