Remote and mobile polling assistants will be sent to two types of health care facilities for this year's Voice referendum in a bid to make the voting process broadly accessible across communities in need.

The AEC revealed on Thursday an expansion of polling services to health care facilities in a bid to provide voting access to people that “need them the most” and might not otherwise be able to attend a designated polling place in-person.

Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers said the change would ensure a much broader, consistent and better targeted range of ballot facilities in addition to the existing service delivery to voters in remote communities. “Australians are fortunate to have an electoral system not enjoyed by so many around the world – a system where the needs of different groups of Australian voters are factored in.”

The service will either be held in a communal area of the facility or delivered as a bed-to-bed provision where required.
