Thousands of ambulance and Environment Agency workers in England will strike in February.

Hours after the announcement of the new strikes, Health Secretary Steve Barclay told MPs on the Health and Social Care Committee he is"keen" to work with trade union bosses but insisted discussions would only be about the coming financial year's pay, not this year as unions have requested. Some 40,000 new joiners to the largest education union will be among those taking part in Wednesday's action, the joint general secretary of the National Education Union Kevin Courtney said.He said the new members, of which the vast majority are teachers, have signed up"because they want to be part of the action".

The union also warned that unless the government has a"major rethink" over NHS pay, and gets involved in"actual talks" with unions, it will announce strike dates running into March.
