The Bureau of Meterology has apologised for causing confusion and panic for Australians after its app sent out a terrifying weather warning as a test.
On Wednesday morning, the BOM app sent a test alert warning about the threat of a tsunami for parts of Australia's east coast after a fictional 8.2 magnitude earthquake hit near New Zealand.
"At 11.40 I received a concerned message from my parents in Oz asking had I felt the 8.2 magnitude earthquake off Waikato and was there a tsunami warning here too. Missed the original warning, but did it really say 8.2!? That would terrify any anyone!" a New Zealand resident posted on X. "Nothing quite like a casual tsunami warning to get the heat rate up on a Wednesday," a third shared.
"The Bureau acknowledges and apologises for any confusion that this test may have caused," the statement said.
