An estimated 6,404 pensioners in Yorkshire are eligible for Pension Credit but are going without it amid soaring energy bills and cuts to Winter Fuel Allowance. Councils across the region are working to identify those who qualify for the benefit, which can top up weekly income to £218.15 for single recipients or £332.95 for couples.

Across Yorkshire , thousands of DWP State Pension ers have been missing out on vital cash because they have not been applying for the right benefits. An estimated 6,404 people who are eligible to claim Pension Credit are going without this winter amid sky-high utility bills and Winter Fuel Allowance being cut for millions up and down the country.

Thousands of pensioners across Yorkshire had been going without the cash boost they were entitled to as local authorities across the country urge some of the poorest people to apply for Pension Credit. Housing Benefit and Attendance Allowance are among other payments people are entitled to and an extra £700 a month - £175 a week - not being claimed.

The council said: "We have identified approx. 4,500 pensioners who are in receipt of Council Tax Reduction but do not receive Pension Credit, we have contacted those where we have telephone numbers and email addresses and issued just under 2,000 text messages and a similar number of emails to say they may be entitled to claim Pension Credit.

"We will make direct contact with these individuals to encourage take-up, as we understand that times are tough and we do all we can to support people through cost of living pressures. We are also working with organisations from Calderdale’s Anti-Poverty Partnership to offer support with completing the application forms and accessing the internet.

A spokesperson for Kirklees Council said: "We fully participated in the DWP Pension Credit take up week 2nd to 6th September promoting pension credit to our third sector partners to encourage take up through their usual channels. Printed literature will also be displayed in all our libraries. This literature will also be distributed to our third sector partners. The website has been updated and other council communications including social media will be encouraging uptake.

Free, confidential and impartial help and advice is available on a range of money related matters such as energy, fuel, food and benefits through the council’s Money Information Centre. More information and details of support can be found here."
