Three fatal motorcycle crashes have occurred in Southern Utah in late July, leaving drivers and motorcycle riders concerned for the safety of their roads.
“It does take responsibility of all parties involved. Cars need to ensure they are paying attention,” Needles said.The first on July 24 occurred just off Exit 8 in St. George. Needles and his Accident Reconstruction Team are investigating the crash.“This crash specifically, we’re looking into whether or not another car was involved or if possible road rage could have contributed to that crash,” he said.
The second occurred in Washington City on Sunday afternoon, when a motorcycle collided with a Jeep. According to Jason Williams of Washington City Police Department, the motorcyclist was ejected from his bike.The third happened just moments later Sunday afternoon in Iron County when a solo-rider missed a turn.“We got motorcyclists in town that do 100+ miles an hour. If they mess up and crash, they are going to die because of that high speed,” he said.
Needles himself, along with many officers at the St. George PD, ride motorcycles. He said basic safety measures, like wearing a helmet, can be the difference between life and death. If you ride a motorcycle, “act like you’re invisible,” he said. “Cars will pull out in front of you. It is our responsibility as motorcycle riders to ensure they are doing so in a safe manner.”
