‘God know what would have happened if they had not’ escaped, Senator Barry Ward said Three gay men have said they were ‘hunted’ as they walked through a park in Dublin by six men armed with knives. They had been walking through Phoenix Park on Monday when they were approached by the armed gang. After being turned away by police because there was no CCTV they contacted Barry Ward, a member of the Irish senate. He said: ‘They were chased down and, as he said, hunted by six men with knives.
’ Ireland only legalised homosexuality in 1993, and Dublin’s first Pride parade was organised in 1983 after Declan Flynn, a gay man, was murdered in Fairview Park. But the country has made great strides on LGBT+ rights since then, now having some of the most progressive laws in the world. Same-sex marriage was legalised after the public showed overwhelming support for it in a 2015 referendum. That same year, legislation was passed to allow same-sex couples to adopt.
