The UAE downscaled its presence in Yemen in 2019, four years after joining the coalition – which is backed by the US, UK and France.Yemen’s government-aligned forces, helped by Emirati-backed militants and Saudi air raids, reclaimed the entire southern province of Shabwa from the Houthis earlier this month.At the start of January, the Houthis, saying there were arms on board, and has refused to release it, or its 11-member crew. The coalition insists it was carrying aid supplies.
‘The UAE has recently escalated its aggression against Yemen by sending forces under its command… to attack the districts of Shabwa governorate,’ the Houthis’ al-Masirah news organisation said today. ‘It has also escalated its aggression by transferring weapons and military equipment to militias affiliated with the aggression through Yemeni territorial waters,’ it added.
The Houthis have targeted the UAE with drones before, though the attacks are often unclaimed or played down by the authorities.
