However, the Steelers head into Atlanta, not necessarily knowing what they are going up against. A completely new staff for the Falcons with a first time offensive coordinator comes into the fold, and with little preseason tape involving the starters, the Steelers will have to play a lot of the guessing game.
New offensive coordinator Zac Robinson should follow some of the model that Rams head coach Sean McVay set out for him already. Sure, Robinson will take things from McVay and maybe even Kevin O’Connell in Minnesota, but the basis of McVay’s scheme now is a blend of gap and zone runs, with more gap coming into the frame than ever, and a heavy usage of 11 personnel. The Falcons ran 185 snaps of 11 personnel in the preseason.
It makes sense because it features the Falcons’ big three, and their depth is at wide receiver more than anywhere else. So, the Steelers should see lots of Darnell Mooney, Ray-Ray McCloud, and KhaDarel Hodge, in addition to Drake London. Still, that is only the start of the offense, and Robinson could add his own twist.Raheem Morris, just like Mike Tomlin, runs a 3-4 front in his base defense.
