'Estamos aquí: Through tears in Paris, 'Troublemaker' Jennifer Lozano makes Laredo proud
PARIS — While she sobbed, cursing the tears as they poured out of her, she thought again about the bullies. She said it doesn’t matter where they are now. “I never knew their names,” Jennifer Lozano said of the kids who tormented her during walks home from the third grade on the south side of Laredo . “They were always older than me. I had no interest in knowing them. I always feared them. I ran away from them.” Lozano doesn’t run away anymore.
At age 8, though, Jennifer Lozano came to her mother with a request that stunned Rodriguez. That boxing gym near their home? The girl wanted to join it, and to learn how to punch. She had her reasons. At the time, she was overweight for her age, and that made her a target for bullies who were making her walks home miserable. Reluctantly, Rodriguez agreed to let her daughter try. “I said, ‘Are you sure about this? This is dangerous!’ ” Rodriguez recalled. “She said, ‘No, mama, I’m going to be OK.
