On Thursday at 8:21 a.m. a severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the National Weather Service valid until 9 a.m. for Bucks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe and Northampton counties.
Published: May. 23, 2024, 8:28 a.m."At 8:20 a.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Coffeetown, or near Allentown, moving east at 55 mph," says the weather service. "Damage to roofs, siding, trees, and power lines is possible."
When venturing outdoors, it's vital to establish a clear plan for seeking shelter in case of lightning. If you find yourself outdoors without access to indoor shelter during a thunderstorm, take these steps to maximize your safety:Steer clear of tall, isolated trees and other prominent objects. In forested areas, stay close to lower stands of trees.
Do not approach water bodies, wet objects, or metal items. Although water and metal do not attract lightning, they conduct electricity effectively and can pose significant risks. When stopping by the roadside is your only option, position your vehicle as far off the road as possible, ideally beyond guardrails. Keep your headlights on and activate emergency flashers to alert other drivers of your position.
