One of the most popular apps in the United States faces a potential ban amid claims the company, owned by ByteDance, represents a national security risk.

Already a subscriber?Legislators in Washington have voted overwhelmingly to approve a bill that would ban app stores in the United States from distributing TikTok unless its Chinese owner divests itself of the popular video-sharing platform, due to growing fears Beijing could easily access the personal information of 170 million Americans.

In response, the bill’s co-sponsors in the House sent a letter to TikTok chief executive Shou Zi Chew asking the company to stop spreading “false claims” to TikTok users, and accusing it of trying to manipulate and mobilise US citizens on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party. But a ban could trigger retaliation from Beijing that could hurt companies such as Apple and Tesla that do a lot of business in China.
