A little bit of olive oil can go a long way when it comes to your health, according to a top nutritional scientist.

Nutritional scientist Tim Spector, professor of genetic epidemiology at King's College London and founder of the Zoe health app, has addressed concerns that cooking with olive oil, a 'superfood' linked to benefits for heart disease, inflammation, and type 2 diabetes, could cause cancer.

"They gave you cancer. I think a lot of this stuff probably propagated by the competition, and it turns out that normal levels of cooking you don't really get above about 180 degrees. So that's not really a problem." He explained: "You do lose some of the polyphenols by heating it. Under regular cooking, you lost about 40% of the polyphenols. If you cook with it, you're not getting the same benefits as you would if you're having on a salad. Therefore, if you've got a very high quality olive oil, you may prefer to keep that as a raw ingredient. But the benefit as well.

Despite being an oil, which many associate with unhealthy food, Prof Spector emphasised its significant health benefits. In a previous Instagram post, he wrote: "If I did believe in 'superfoods' olive oil would be one of them. While many of us were taught to fear fat, research shows that diets rich in extra virgin olive oil are associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.
