The small village of Rhosneigr in North Wales has seen house prices skyrocket by more than £600,000 in the last three decades, transforming from an under-the-radar holiday spot to a playground for the super-rich
Three decades ago, a series of townhouses just a short stroll from Rhosneigr's beach remained on the market due to lack of interest. Immersed in the backdrop of Anglesey's western shores, the small village didn't appeal much to those outside its bounds back in 1996.
It’s become somewhat of a norm lately—with homes, even modest cottages boasting ocean vistas, being snapped up almost immediately after listing, reports North Wales Live. In the quaint village of Rhosneigr, residents like Moore appreciate its beauty but experience an undeniable charm that captures their hearts. "It's got a vibe to it," says Nadine Moore, a 30 year old water sports aficionado who, despite global travels, chose this seaside spot as home.Having lived in the village for the past five years, Moore reveals that Rhosneigr is a hotspot for influential figures seeking a beachside getaway.
Moore also notes the upscale crowd drawn by the aquatic opportunities. " brings a lot of wealth over from like Chester or Manchester, rich individuals who come over here because they get to launch a powerboat and use the water quite luxuriously. They have beautiful homes that overlook a beach destination."
In 2023, the Welsh Language Society pointed to the proliferation of second homes as a major factor in the decline of Welsh speakers in Rhosneigr. The village saw only 27% of its population speaking the native language – a stark contrast to neighbouring towns and one of the lowest rates in Anglesey. Councillor Browne has pointed out that, despite the legislation leading to house sales, it's not the locals who are buying. The properties remain prohibitively expensive, and the surge in home-working due to the Covid pandemic has attracted buyers from across Britain to places like Rhosneigr.
