Prejudice isn't an opinion, it is malicious.

It’s a sensational show, but one character has left me more bewildered than anyone else , but in his latest masterpiece, Tip Toe , we have been gut-punched with the reality of what being queer and trans in Britain today is like.

I found myself wondering what the point was in portraying her views in such a nonchalant way, especially in the openly queer and trans world that Davies had created in the show. Leo, played by the brilliant Alan Cumming, owns a gay bar on Canal Street; a sanctuary for lonely queers to find their people.

He lives next door to Clive, an angry electrician who has been sucked into the vortex of conspiracy theories and thrown out the other side as a homophobic racist who has irrational fears that the queer community is brainwashing children. There’s a lot to be said for how fractured the world has become; intentionally broken by populist politics and.

It’s becoming increasingly impossible to sit on the fence on any community issues, and Tip Toe doesn’t remotely suggest that anyone should even try. But among its core messages, it asks us to listen to the other side of every conversation – to engage our curiosity on how someone with a completely different perspective got there in the first place.

Because there’s something in me that thinks that we can do without Elizabeth Berrington’s portrayal of the gender critical social worker, Stephanie. In a recent interview with The Guardian, about the show, Davies said: ‘I’ve got friends who are gender-critical. It’s only online you end up screaming and shouting and being attacked by them. In real life, you have a chat, and we all kind of sigh and put up with each other.

That’s how the world works. It’s actually how the world is ceasing to work. ’ I was confused about Davies’ reluctance to fall out with gender-critical friends, and it seems that’s at least been part of the inspiration for the character of Stephanie.

We can do without Elizabeth Berrington’s portrayal of the gender critical social worker, Stephanie As a character, she felt so at odds with everyone she hangs around with – the queer and trans people in Leo’s orbit. Because I firmly believe that although we can agree to disagree as friends, there are fundamental principles I would not put up with – and I think this would ring true for Leo and his staff.

I appreciate Stephanie is central to Davies’ message about a world being torn apart by division, but in an otherwise almost perfect television show, the character is where I struggle, and the creator’s context doesn’t make that any better. I can abide by different opinions; I’m happy to debate politics and disagree with others, but I draw the line at homophobia,Yes, it brings depth and nuance to the show.

Although Stephanie loves Leo, she is wary of his queerness, making remarks like: ‘I think you lot are so full of all your freedoms you don’t know when to stop’. Their friendship feels bound by time rather than connection or common ground. Perhaps that is true of some friendships – the time spent together has been so vast and rich that a bit of gender-critical discourse isn’t enough to end it.

As a character, she felt so at odds with everyone she hangs around with – the queer and trans people in Leo’s orbit When I recently discovered a friend of mine had similar views as Stephanie, among other major disagreements we have, I asked myself if I should hold my friends to the same standard as everyone else. It’s those gender-critical voices who are celebrating the erosion of trans rights, pushing them people out of social spaces and leaving them petrified to leave the house.

As much as Davies is doing for the LGBTQ+ community as a staunch defender of trans rights, I’m struggling to grapple with the idea that we should simply ‘sigh and put up with’ views that make life harder – or even impossible – for an already vulnerable part of our community.the holy grail of LGBTQ+ television – it was an unapologetic celebration of everything great, bold and outrageous about our community.was urgent and life-changing – the show gave generations of queer people the space to come together, listen to each other and vow to protect one another. And this latest triumph, Tip Toe, is already having a deservedly seismic impact, even with the caveat about this gender critical insert.

Davies has stood up for trans people time and time again on huge platforms and been called a ‘paedophile’ or ‘groomer’ simply for saying that trans people exist.. I too have received similar abuse, albeit on a much smaller scale, in my inbox for defending the trans community – I’ll likely receive some for writing this piece. But whether from strangers or friends, I won’t ‘sigh and put up with’ transphobia like Davies has claimed to.

I have no doubt that Davies is well-intentioned. He’s done more than enough to prove that his heart and moral code are in the right place – he has after all spent decades showing audiences what courage looks like. There’s no need to Tip Toe around it. Get your favourite puzzles when they are ready to play on the website sent directly to you every day and track your daily streak!
