Tuesday marked the first official day of spring, but chilly temperatures continue to stick around.
The cold weather means you’ve been bundling up and keeping warm, but have you been protecting your plants? The blast of winter weather can damage our plants, but not everything is in danger. Alabama Cooperative Extension System Agent Bethany O’Rear says established plants should be fine.
It’s newly-planted perennials or annuals she says you need to cover up when the temperature drops below freezing. You’ve probably heard the advice to wait until after Easter to plant. O’Rear says they advise after April 15. She says that’s the average day frost date for Alabama. “I know we’ve been having some really warm temperatures, everybody’s itching to get those new plants in the ground, but I would just be cautious,” O’Rear said. “Just because we can doesn’t necessarily mean we should. So I really feel like spring is not here just yet.”
We’ve also seen a lot of rain lately. You might be seeing more fire ants around your yard. O’Rear says the rain doesn’t attract them, but makes ants more visible as they build mounds on top instead of under ground. She says the best way to manage ants is to use a bait product. Not reading this story on the WSFA News App? Get news alerts FASTER and FREE in the
