Titanic The Musical, at Liverpool Empire, steered away from the well known and loved fictional romance
It's fair to say the tale of the Titanic and its fateful and only voyage in 1912 has been dominated by James Cameron's film adaptation starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.
The musical, which is an adaptation of Peter Stone's book for Broadway, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, instead followed the stories of several passengers from all classes, from boarding the liner at Southampton to its sinking in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15. The iceberg hits the RMS Titanic at the end of Act 1, and after that the drama was much stronger as the simple set design, which disappointingly remained the same for most of the musical, evolved to cleverly depict the ship's sinking.
One scene which did tug at the heartstrings and got a resounding 'aw' from the audience was when Captain Smith asked one of the bellboys, when the ship was sinking, how old he was to which he replied '14 sir'. This became all the more emotional when the audience heard, at the end of the show, that all 50 young bellboys on board perished.
