But now in a new paper in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , researchers at the University of Houston believe "micro-buckling" in the hull of the Titan may have caused it to collapse under pressure. "The material used for the Titan's hull was a carbon fiber composite. It is well known that under compression loading the fibers in such composites are susceptible to micro-buckling and that they may delaminate from the matrix that surrounds them.
"We derived equations that allow us to predict the resistance to buckling of structures in terms of the parameters that are involved including the shapes and distribution of their imperfections," Ballarini said.
