2 of 850The brothers pioneered a new kind of service that involved pre-made hamburgers and a limited menu. This allowed them to sell cheaply and serve more customers - inventing the concept of "fast food".The McDonalds began working with salesman Ray Kroc, who bought them out and took ownership of the McDonalds brand in 1961. The brothers had to rename their original restaurant "The Big M".
Winnipeg was at the time Canada's third-largest city, and about 30,000 striking workers halted economic activity for over a month. The strike came to a head on June 21, on a date referred to as Bloody Saturday, when a mass demonstration was staged over the arrest of strike leaders some days before. Two strikers were killed by mounted police who fired into the crowd.
