The former Ibrox striker reckons Todd Cantwell could be a key man as the Light Blues look to end a miserable run against their rivals.
But I’m pretty sure that won’t be the case at Hampden on Saturday. For me, Todd Cantwell HAS to start the Scottish Cup Final for Rangers against Celtic. It’s a must for Philippe Clement , especially with how the previous derbies have gone. At Parkhead last weekend, Cantwell didn’t even get off the bench as 10-man Rangers effectively lost the league.
He has already scored in an Old Firm game, remember. But there’s another side to it. For some reason, it looks like Todd is constantly trying to project an image of himself, when there’s no need. All he has to do is let his football do the talking because he’s good enough. When you’re second best, the flak flies. That’s the way it is – and it’s where Rangers are right now. Whether he likes it or not, their recent form has been poor. There’s been 13 points thrown away in the last nine league games.
From where they were when Michael Beale left, to lift two domestic cups and just miss out on the league? That’s a successful campaign in the circumstances. If you’d said to Celtic fans when Clement came in that all they would win is the league by a few points – would they have been happy? I’ve experienced the flip side. And I still get nightmares about losing the 2016 final against Hibs, even now. It was a disaster. You don’t want to suffer what I felt that day. It would hang over Rangers’ players for the entire summer.
