Tom Ilube has stepped down as Rugby Football Union chairman following a backlash over high executive bonuses. The RFU is facing criticism for significant pay increases, particularly for CEO Bill Sweeney, despite record losses.

Tom Ilube has stepped down as Rugby Football Union chairman, pre-empting a possible grassroots rebellion over the scale of the organisation's executive bonuses. Ilube, appointed in August 2021, faced a potential vote of no-confidence as a motion to remove him gained support among England's community clubs. As the only permanent member of the RFU 's remuneration committee, which oversees pay for employees earning over £180,000 annually, Ilube was at the center of the controversy.

'I have decided to step down from my role as chair of the RFU as recent events have become a distraction from the game but will stay on to ensure a smooth transition to a new chair as soon as one is in place,' said Ilube. The RFU's latest accounts revealed chief executive Bill Sweeney received a total of £1.1 million despite the organization posting record losses. Sweeney's pay in 2020, his first full year in the role, was £430,000, after taking a voluntary 20% pay cut during the pandemic. However, a three-year incentive plan implemented in 2021, tied to performance goals, has dramatically increased his salary. The RFU Council has initiated an 'immediate, independent review' of the incentive plan, citing 'reputational damage to the sport'. 'I'm pleased that an independent review of the LTIP (long-term incentive plan) scheme has been commissioned and look forward to its findings once completed,' added Ilube
