Two years later, ‘Wood’ you do it again?
Nearly two years after the Padres traded them to the Nationals for Juan Soto, the left-handed trio of former Padres draftees CJ Abrams, MacKenzie Gore and James Wood represent an exciting future for Washington.
Nationals left fielder James Wood takes the field during the first inning of Monday’s big-league debut. Preller’s clever counterpart with the Nationals, Mike Rizzo, got a worthy haul for Soto. The slugging outfielder was Washington’s homegrown star who in 2019 led the Nationals to the franchise’s lone World Series trophy and by 2022 became more expensive than the rebuilding club desired.Certainly, that case can be made. It will be of no surprise if all three players pan out for the Nationals.
From there, Soto delivered a decent postseason as the Padres reached their first League Championship Series since 1998. Those games created valued memories for sellout crowds in San Diego, as did a home contest against the Phillies in the NLCS. It had been nearly a quarter of a century since the Padres generated a fraction of that much excitement in a postseason.
