The wide man was frozen out of the picture by ex-boss Rob Page
Tom Lawrence was caught on the wrong side of what Wayne Rooney described as “a bit of history” when it came to relations with his former Wales boss Rob Page.
But Page never did, with Lawrence left an outcast for the majority of his four-year Welsh reign. However, there’s now fresh scope for optimism for the Ibrox playmaker when it comes to hopes of adding to his 23 senior caps. “I spoke with the manager and I think we both agreed to leave this squad,” said Lawrence, who last pulled on a red jersey for a friendly win over Mexico back in March 2021. “Due to the place I'm in now, fitness-wise, I want to carry that on and then we'll have a discussion before the October camp and see where we go from there. Am I positive he’ll call me? Yes, 100 percent. It's good that I can have that relationship with the manager. That’s the main thing.
The immediate future with Rangers involves a trip to Celtic Park next Saturday for the opening Old Firm showdown of the season. It’s a clash that could have major repercussions for Philippe Clement’s side and their chances of mounting a serious title bid this term. But Lawrence isn’t so sure the outcome of the game will have much of a bearing on his international prospects.
Wrexham-born Lawrence was the instigator for Cyriel Dessers’ opener before getting on the scoresheet with the Light Blues’ fourth of the afternoon. His strike came after a surging run from Cardiff-raised Matondo and was one of two assists the jet-heeled winger registered alongside his brace of goals.
