Northern Irish golfer lost out on a play-off to Marcel Siem
It was a day of mixed emotions for Tom McKibbin at the Italian Open. The Northern Irish golfer narrowly missed out on his second DP World Tour title as he lost a play-off to Marcel Siem.
McKibbin's disappointment was eased however with the news that he has qualified for the Open at Royal Troon next month. It's another major debut for the 21-year-old coming weeks after his participation at the US Open. McKibbin began the day six shots behind of a four-way lead at the top. He produced a superb round of 65 to set a clubhouse target of 10-under par for those following behind.Read next: Reading's financial issues set to impact the future of Northern Ireland stars
Siem and Antoine Rozner reached 13-under par before they faltered on the back nine. Siem bogeyed the 11th, 14th, 15th and 17th to fall one behind, but then holed from 22 feet for birdie on the last. The 43-year-old holed a birdie putt on the first play-off hole to deny McKibbin a first title since his debut win in last year's Porsche European Open. The Galgorm Castle touring professional however had the consolation of securing one of the two qualifying places for the upcoming Open Championship at Royal Troon along with American Sean Crocker.
