ALDOT has also released their Memorial Day Weekend traffic plan in light of the toll plaza's closing.
The $5 was dropped at noon Thursday after the state of Alabama bought the bridge from the Baldwin County Bridge Company.from the Baldwin County Bridge Company for $57 million. The City of Orange Beach is receiving a $3 million payout for road improvements.
FOX10 News spoke to two toll workers who were off the clock but out celebrating what they’re calling a ‘bittersweet end.’ “We had good customers and we got to know everybody so it’s going to be hard, but it’s a nice change,” added Melanie Bailey. “There will be reduced speeds. The reduced speeds are 35 and 40 mph so you will get to this spot and you will have to slow down. You can see the traffic is moving smoothly- a little smoother than normal because there’s no toll like it’s a two-lane highway, which it will be at some point,” said Gordon.
