Scotland's top civil servant was informed of the arrest of Peter Murrell by police before it was made public, it has been revealed.
Murrell, the former chief executive of the SNP, was arrested at the home he shares with Nicola Sturgeon in Glasgow and questioned by detectives for several hours before being released without charge. In an email to Humza Yousaf on April 5, Marks wrote: "As is routine for all high-profile Police Scotland action, the Chief Constable contacted me at 8am this morning to update on Operation Branchform.
"I informed you after the event and after this PS action had occurred; as is routine, with the explicit permission of the CC.
