The NHS is facing a 'tripledemic' of RSV, Covid and flu

A top doctor has spoken about the different viruses hitting thousands across the UK - with a 'vital' piece of advice which people can do to ease their symptoms.

But if you've been struggling to figure out what exactly you've come down with lately, you're not alone. The Manchester Evening News spoke to Greater Manchester's top doctor about the different viruses, why it's hard to distinguish between them, and how hard it is to find out exactly how bad the spread is getting.

“Generally, if you’ve got true flu, you’re bed bound. With Covid, you might actually be quite well. You might be coughing and having other symptoms, but able to go about your business – and you might be unintentionally spreading it to people who are vulnerable.” “Covid-19 may lead to a loss of taste or smell and more frequent breathing difficulties,” explained Dr Tang. “RSV often causes wheezing and is more likely to affect infants, while the flu tends to hit quickly with sudden fever and body aches.Bolton GP Dr Wall says she has observed that more recent coronavirus cases appear more flu-like in nature in comparison to past variants. Lately, Covid seems to have been exhausting people so they’re ‘wiped out’.

“For infants, seek medical attention if they are struggling to breathe, are dehydrated, or if the child becomes unusually lethargic,” he said. “Many older adults are at risk of vitamin D deficiency, particularly in winter when sunlight exposure is low. While vitamin D can help boost overall immunity, it’s not a specific treatment for these viruses. However, ensuring adequate levels through supplements or diet may help reduce the risk of respiratory infections.”

Dr Wall highlights that the data available to public health officials is 'skewed', as reported results are primarily from hospitalised individuals who are either severely ill with Covid or have contracted the virus while in hospital for another illness or injury.
