'Our crown courts cannot remain closed when domestic violence is escalating'
Calls are being made for criminal trials to go ahead without juries during theJury trials in the UK have been halted since march in an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19. But it has exacerbated a growing backlog of cases awaited trial and comes after the Government cut the number of sitting days for crown court judges.
Now Sir Richard Henriques has suggested judges should head cases alone without juries throughout the length of the pandemic with judges hearing cases alone. Writing in The Times, the QC calls the idea a ‘simple and economical solution’. He added: ‘Our crown courts cannot remain closed when domestic violence is escalating, prisons are overcrowded with people awaiting trial, fraudsters exploit Covid-19 opportunities and the existing backlog of cases grows ever longer.Coronavirus latest news and updates
