There are fears of a repeat of issues seen last year
A top doctor has warned of another difficult winter ahead for the NHS, which he claims is "not sufficiently resilient" to deal with it. The health service came under extreme strain last winter across the country, with the season described as one of the worst on record for the NHS.
Dr Adrian Boyle, president of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine , fears the health service could face a similar situation this winter as last year. He told the PA news agency: "We remain concerned about how we’re going to be able to look after our patients this winter. Dr Boyle will be attending a major meeting at Downing Street to discuss NHS winter plans. Also in attendance will be the Prime Minister and Health Secretary, NHS leaders, top doctors and charities.
The RCEM will also call for more to be done in terms of staff vaccination against flu and Covid. Speaking ahead of the meeting, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said: “This year we started planning for winter earlier than before. Earlier this year, NHS England announced plans for cash incentives for local hospitals who “overachieve” on performance measures such as A&E waiting times and ambulance handover times. It also announced plans to introduce social care “traffic control centres” to help speed up hospital discharges so patients could be shipped out of hospitals when they no longer needed to be there.
