The decision by Ms Gray to deal solely with Acoba meant that without her providing details about when she started speaking to Sir Keir about joining his team, the Cabinet Office was provided legal advice that it could not issue a more full-throated update on her in its written ministerial statement on Tuesday.

Ms Gray is understood to have submitted dates to Acoba on when she discussed joining Sir Keir’s staff. Labour has also not engaged with the Cabinet Office inquiry, with no one from the Labour leader’s office giving interviews to officials looking into the issue. Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves dismissed the Cabinet Office probe, insisting that Ms Gray was cooperating with the “normal process”.
