Conservatives and Labour shy away from a political fight with Reform - insisting the election is a two-party race
Leader of Reform UK Nigel Farage reacts after delivering a speech to launch the hard-right party’s general election manifesto in Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales launched his party’s manifesto – dubbed its “contract” with voters – in South Wales.
“In this country, whoever we vote for in the end, the British people choose authoritative, sensible managers, whether from the left or the right. What they don’t do, is go in for the performative politics that Nigel has made such a successful financial career out of”. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer dismissed Farage as “noises off” and insisted that the election was a contest between the Tories and Labour.
He added: “The choice on 4 July is a choice of two different governments,” he said. “All the noises off don’t change that simple choice.”“In the end, it will be a Labour Government or a Conservative government. And if people want change after 14 years of decline and chaos, then they have to vote Labour,” he told journalists.
But by refusing to challenge Farage both parties also run the risk of giving his policies free reign without the same level of scrutiny they are applying to each other. Reform has also promised to increase the income tax personal allowance to £20,000, raising the threshold for paying the higher rate to £70,000, and scrapping inheritance tax on estates under £2 million.
