“I think the problem is not actually the current Government. The problem is the damage that Boris Johnson and Liz Truss did to the Conservative brand,” GavinBarwell, Theresa May’s former chief of staff, said on BBC Radio 4 eleanormia reports
programme. “No 10 will privately not be surprised at this result.”
He said: “If you look at the national polls, the Conservatives are still a long way behind, they are in serious political difficulty. And the gap has narrowed since Rishi Sunak took over. “If you ask the question who makes the best Prime Minister, Sunak is pretty competitive with Starmer.” He added: “The problem is not Sunak, he’s improving the situation. But he started miles behind and he’s got a hell of a job to do to try to close the gap.”
This was echoed by transport minister Huw Merriman, who told the BBC that local constituents he had spoken to have been “talking about older news about former prime ministers”“He seems to be turning things around for us, but this is the opportunity for the electorate to give their vote on where we have been previously,” Merriman said.
