The tactics deployed this year by the UK Government have been politically motivated and designed to undermine the SNP government, experts say.

Rishi Sunak could start using more extreme heavy-handed tactics against the Scottish Government in the lead up to the general election, experts have warned.

Their new report reveals how the Tories were using extreme tactics to exert authority in Scotland but asserts that officials in the SNP led adminstration at Holyrood are not entirely blameless. The think tank’s Constitution Monitoring Group report said the decision by the UK Government to block Holyrood’s plans to reform the Gender Recognition Act by using a Section 35 order for the first time in history, was “motivated by party political gain”.

Top news stories today The report also called out Scottish Secretary Alister Jack and said: “While the Secretary of State for Scotland has claimed that the Order was a matter of last resort, in truth there appears relatively little evidence of the UK Government attempting to engage productively in the shaping of this legislation.

The report also highlighted the UK Government’s insistence that Scotland’s drinks recycling scheme was not allowed to contain glass for it to get approval from Westminster.
