The Conservative Party is facing a significant funding challenge after raising less than a tenth of their 2019 election haul. The party needs to replenish its coffers to meet operating costs and prepare for future elections.
The Conservative Party (Tories) raised just under £1.9 million during the election, less than a tenth of what they managed in 2019. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch is going to have to spend 2025 being extremely nice to people, specifically, rich people who might donate to the party. The party ended the six-week election campaign with only around £5 million in the bank, falling to just £3 million after a round of staff redundancies.
Staff numbers at Conservative Campaign HQ, which were boosted for the election fight, tailed off, leaving members of the Shadow Cabinet with only a handful of key people to draw on for research and media support. The Tories need around £25 million a year for party operating costs, rising to around £50 million in a general election year. Staff costs are around £6 million a year, which comes from so-called short money – taxpayer funds allocated on the basis of how well an opposition party fared at the previous general election. Badenoch is separately allocated just over £1 million for the running of her office as Leader of the Opposition. Co-chairman of the party, Dominic Johnson, a member of the House of Lords, is already on a drive to boost funding for local elections in May. The party will also be anxious to find a replacement for the well-respected, longstanding party supporter Stephen Massey who recently announced his departure as Chief Executive. Massey, a wealthy banker, was understood not to draw a salary. Badenoch is starting from a low base
