Rishi Sunak apologised for leaving D-Day commemorations early
Veterans John Life and Donald Jones return to Sword Beach where they landed on D-Day in Normandy, France. Faint hopes of Conservatives pulling off an unlikely general election victory have been all but destroyed by Rishi Sunak’s decision to leave D-Day commemorations early, party insiders believe.
“Mistakes happen in election campaigns. This is a whopper and one I fear we will not be able to recover from.” The insider said the entire episode was “100 per cent” a gaffe on the scale of then-PM Gordon Brown accusing voter Gillian Duffy of being a “bigoted woman” in a hot mic moment in 2010.Another insider agreed “it seems in that league” as a “terrible” gaffe that would be the nail in the coffin of Sunak’s campaign “if it needed one”.
A Cabinet minister said that Sunak’s apology meant it was now time to “move on”, while one candidate said only two voters had raised the row on the doorstep on Friday afternoon They added: “We don’t understand why were given that time for the interview. It was the only time offered by No 10 so we took it.”understands that Sunak was blindsided by Starmer’s appearance at the international event alongside Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron, and the implications that would have as the Prime Minister let Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron stand in while the Labour leader was pictured with global leaders.
Foreign secretary David Cameron also defended Sunak, arguing: “It’s a tribute to the way he is… he came straight out and said he’d wished he’s stayed longer. He was a the British event where he was with the veterans and gave a fantastic speech”.
