It comes after their former candidate Dan Barker quite the party to defect to Reform
The Conservatives have selected a new candidate to stand for Greater Manchester mayor less than 24 hours after their previous candidate defected to Reform UK. Dan Barker quit the party yesterday after claiming he did not get enough support.
She told the Manchester Evening News that she was 'devastated' that she could not put herself forward at first due to a 'family issue'. However, she will now be standing for the Conservatives following a 'sped up' process to select a new candidate last night .It comes after Mr Barker, who will now be representing Reform UK at the election on May 2, said that the Conservatives have 'given up on Greater Manchester and the North'.
Mrs Evans said that she received 'lots of support' from the party when she last stood in 2021. But she said: "If you're standing for Greater Manchester mayor, you are standing alone for a subject that matters to you. Ultimately, you don't need hand holding." She criticised Mr Burnham's decision to bring buses under public control, claiming she told him it would be 'costly', and said she would review this decision if she was elected as mayor. She also criticised the millions of pounds that has been spent on the Clean Air Zone.
