Labour to release figures ahead of cancelling the scheme
Boris Johnson promised a bus revolution as part of a pledge to boost public transport in 2020 The then prime minister launched a scheme in 2020 to retrofit diesel buses in a bid to cut dangerous nitrogen oxide emissions in older vehicles by 80 per cent.
Officials said that the scheme has swallowed up £95m of taxpayers’ cash on “faulty technology” affecting around 9,000 buses. The retrofitting scheme was meant to work as a stopgap while the government attempted to roll out 4,000 “green” buses that run on electricity or hydrogen by 2025.
