Conservatives are aiming to pile pressure on Labour for taking in the Dover MP
Senior Tories have warned that the party wants to heap further political pressure on Sir Keir Starmer as it seeks to capitalise on Labour unrest over the defection of Dover MP Natalie Elphicke – and dissuade other Tory MPs from jumping ship.
Ms Duffield said that the claims should be “thoroughly investigated”, adding that Labour would be calling for the same if it were a Tory MP “and therefore it should apply when it’s one of our own MPs, which apparently Natalie now is”. “Obviously Natalie says they are not true, it’s not her recollection of the meeting and so she says it is nonsense.
She became the second defector in as many weeks, following in the footsteps of former Tory minister Dan Poulter just the week before.
