It's in addition to a yellow weather warning for wind issued by the Met Office
A tornado warning has been issued for Nottingham after a forecast for high winds over the coming week. The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation announced details of the warning via its X, formerly Twitter account at 7.10pm this eevening.
The warning, in place as Storm Debi looks to wreak havoc across the country, is in place for 12 hours between midnight tonight and 12pm on Monday. It covers a large portion of Ireland, Wales and the Midlands. Hazards warned of include "one or two tornadoes", "wind gusts of up to 70mph ", "occasional lightning" and "hail, 14-20mm in diameter". The TORRO website explains that Storm Debi will move across Ireland overnight.The tornado alert comes amid yellow weather warnings issued by the Met Office for parts of the UK. For a portion of England which includes parts of north Nottinghamshire, a wind warning is in place from 4am tomorrow until 6pm tomorrow .
The Met Office website says "Storm Debi has the potential to bring very strong and disruptive winds on Monday." It says that people should expect "possible injuries and danger to life from flying debris" as well as "some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs".There are currently no warnings in place for the rest of the week.
