Ellis was one of the youngest members of the Leafs' last Stanley Cup team in 1966-67 — playing all 12 games during their playoff run.

He played 16 seasons in the . “We mourn the loss of Ron Ellis, a lifetime Leaf whose legacy is woven into the fabric of the blue and white,” the Leafs said in a statement. He returned to the ice for Canada at the 1977 World Hockey Championships, before resuming his NHL career with the Leafs in 1977-78. His last NHL season was 1980-81. His 332 goals rank fifth in Leafs franchise history. Lanny McDonald, chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame, was a rookie in Toronto during the last years of Ellis’ career with the Leafs, and remembered him as a great confidante, teacher and mentor. McDonald eventually had a Hall of Fame career.
