Suella Braverman has hit out at Tory MPs for forcing the Prime Minister to U-turn on the abolition of the 45p rate of higher tax.“I’m very disappointed that members of our own parliamentary party staged a coup effectively and undermined the authority of the Prime Minister in an unprofessional way,” she told a fringe event hosted byThe Home Secretary said she had been in favour of cutting the higher rate of tax, which she said would have driven growth and encouraged higher earners to work more.
Ms Braverman said long term former minister Michael Gove was wrong to intervene and criticise the tax cut.The Home Secretary added: “We’re on the same team. And we should be focused on being united and delivering for the British people.” Minister for Levelling Up Simon Clarke agreed with her remarks, tweeting: “Suella speaks a lot of good sense, as usual.”
