Minister tells i the Home Secretary is ‘fuelling’ far right as MP suggests support is draining away on Tory WhatsApp groupshas been accused by senior Conservatives of “whipping up” community tensions and increasing the prospect of violence at a pro-Palestine march and far-right counter demonstrations on Saturday.
One Tory MP suggested support for Ms Braverman was ebbing away on the backbenches with only a “small number on the hard right of the party” defending her in WhatsApp groups while the rest were “at best disappointed, or at worst horrified by her divisive rhetoric on both the tents and the marches”.
International Development Minister Andrew Mitchell meanwhile told the Commons on Wednesday: “In terms of what the Home Secretary said, we are all responsible for what we say and she said it in the way that she did.”“If you take the most recent example, I suspect the vast majority of voters would agree with her that we don’t want people living on the streets and that drug taking, aggressive begging and so on are a problem.
