But Mike Padgham, chairman of the Independent Care Group, warned the “nonsensical” plan to close temporary visa schemes to recruit overseas workers may lead to care homes closing and put more pressure on the NHS.
Care England and the Trade Union Congress have called for a Government-funded minimum wage of £15 per hour for care workers.Social care workers, care assistants and home care worker roles are currently included on the Shortage Occupation List and under that list they can apply for a Health and Care Worker visa.
On Monday, a Downing Street spokesperson said the Government is not planning to remove care workers from the shortage occupation list despite calls from backbench MPs to close the temporary visa schemes. “It’s not as though the numbers are going to reduce, the numbers of people who work in the sector will have to go up. So unless the Government’s got a fantastic plan. I can’t know how things are going to work.”Ms Cates compared the issuing of visas for care workers with the Government’s emergency plans to tackle a shortage of HGV drivers during the pandemic.
