Tory rebels force Rishi Sunak to back down over planning reforms 🔴 As many as 47 backbenchers and former Cabinet ministers had put their name to an amendment calling for compulsory housing targets to be scrapped
Tory rebels were seeking to hijack the Bill in a bid to halt “low density, car dependent” housing developments in their constituencies.
One of the rebel ring leaders, Bob Seely, insisted that Tory MPs supporting the amendments “wanted to see development and regeneration”, while a source said they wanted to “work with the Government, it is not about defeating the Government”. But the decision by the Prime Minister to pull the vote shows the scale of the task he faces in trying to manage aA Government source added: “We will continue to engage constructively with colleagues over the next few weeks to ensure we build more of the right homes in the right places.”
The group of Tory MPs was seeking to make all housing targets set by Whitehall advisory only, thereby giving councils the power to go against the presumption in favour of development.
