The Prime Minister will push Nato allies to increase the target for defence spending above its current level of 2 per cent of GDP

The Prime Minister will this week challenge other Nato leaders to increase theBut he has ditched a promise to raise Britain’s own defence spending by 0.5 per cent faster than inflation each year. A senior Government source said: “The manifesto was written before £400bn had to be spent locking people up for their own safety because of the global pandemic. There is a reality check on things that were offered in a different age.

Mr Wallace said on Tuesday: “If governments historically responded every time the NHS has a winter crisis so must they when the threat to the very security which underpins our way of life increases. For too long defence has lived on a diet of smoke and mirrors, hollowed-out formations and fantasy savings when in the last few years threats from states have started to increase.”

Ms Truss told the Commons foreign affairs committee she agreed with the Defence Secretary and added: “The free world did not spend enough on defence post the Cold War and we are now paying the consequences.”
