'We have been blown away with the response'
A fundraiser to create a mural in memory of The Smiths star Andy Rourke in Greater Manchester has reached its target - meaning plans for it to be unveiled are now in motion.
Last month, former The Smiths drummer Mike Joyce launched a fundraiser along with the Pancreatic Cancer Action charity to create a lasting tribute to Rourke in his home city. In just two weeks, the campaign has raised more than £23,000.The artwork will be created by Manchester street artist Akse P19 and will be based at The Wheatsheaf pub, which is situated near Mackie Mayor and Gulliver’s on Oak Street in the Northern Quarter.
“It means the mural is going ahead and I am over the moon, as is everyone involved. We have been blown away with the response and sincerely, no matter what size the donation, you've made it happen.The mural will be unveiled on November 21 which is also Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day. The campaign is to stay open in case people want to continue donating, with any money surpassing the target to be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action charity.
