Police are investigating officers sent to a brawl involving Canberra Raiders hooker Tom Starling after he was cleared over the fight, as the player's mother said the ordeal has been "devastating".The 25-year-old NRL star and his brothers Jackson, 26, and Josh, 21, scuffled with police while celebrating a birthday.Starling was later cleared of assaulting police after six of the seven charges against him were dropped.
As police announced the probe, Starling's mother Joanne told Ben Fordham on 2GB it had been a "tough few years" which almost ended her son's playing career."The NRL were very close to standing him down. "To have seven charges applied to you, and then when it was independently reviewed, to only have one minor offence stand, when I mentioned that to the investigation and detective they were quite shocked and had never heard of that before."CCTV was played to court of the moment that sparked the brawl which ended with police and riot squad officers attending.
Raiders coach Ricky Stuart told Fordham he had asked Starling what happened and believed what he told him."The whole club supported Tom."
