Cleaning influencer Leanne has shared a simple hack to help make hard, stiff towels feel soft and fluffy again – and results could be noticeable from the very first wash.

There's nothing quite like wrapping yourself in a soft, plush towel after a shower. Yet hard water, wear and tear, and repeated exposure to oils and grime can damage the fibres, causing towels to become rough and rigid over time.

Getting your towels back to their original softness may appear difficult, but the laundry fix is remarkably straightforward, according to cleaning influencer @home.with.leanne. Leanne explained: "Your towels aren't old; you're just washing them wrong.

" She revealed how a single basic ingredient transformed her towels "from stiff and scratchy to soft, fluffy, hotel-level again". The very same modest ingredient used for baking cakes can perform miracles in your washing machine – bicarbonate of soda. This household essential has numerous applications, functioning as a stain lifter, smell eliminator, drain cleaner and towel softener.

For optimal results, simply pour roughly half a cup of baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda, straight into your washing machine drum alongside your towels. According to the video, this technique works to dissolve the stubborn detergent build-up that gathers over time, leaving your towels feeling softer and fluffier rather than stiff. It appears that using additional detergent doesn't automatically mean cleaner towels. Actually, using excessive amounts can produce the reverse outcome.

Surplus soap might not wash away entirely, especially in dense fabrics such as towels. Rather, it has a tendency to stick to the fibres, creating that unwanted crispy feel. The widely-shared advice suggests cutting your normal detergent quantity in half, which is typically adequate to wash towels properly in any case. The beauty of this trick lies in its simplicity.

There's no requirement for specialist products or intricate procedures. Simply place your towels inside, sprinkle in some baking soda, and start a warm washing cycle. Another crucial element of this approach? Laundering towels at the correct temperature, which Leanne maintains should be 40C. This moderate heat achieves the ideal balance, being sufficiently warm to cleanse effectively and remove oils and build-up, while remaining mild enough to protect the fabric fibres from deterioration.

Over time, this technique helps maintain that plush, fluffy texture rather than breaking down the towels. Those who've experimented with this method say the difference is instantly apparent. Towels come out softer and smelling fresher, almost as though they've been upgraded to hotel-standard linens overnight.

"Such a good and low tox hack, and nothing better than a fluffy, soft, white bath towel," commented one follower. "Definitely doing this, thank you," said another.
