'I can’t think of anything else Beeston needs and I’d rather see a shop than any more flats'
People in Beeston have been sharing their thoughts on whether Aldi would be welcomed to the town. The supermarket has pledged to invest £1.4 billion in the UK and Nottingham is on the list for new stores.
"I mostly go to Tesco or Sainsbury’s but we already have a Lidl. Although they’re different shops [Aldi and Lidl] they’re pretty much the same prices.” Pam, who is now retired, lives in Beeston. She added: “I don’t think the area needs it.”It has been reported recently that the Lidl at West Point Shopping Centre is up for sale. The shop is on the market for £1.5 million and will be relocating to Long Eaton. The new Lidl in Long Eaton should be open by the summer of 2024.
Tim, now retired, has lived in Beeston for 25 years. He added: “Shops like Aldi go down well with students and everyone else, the Lidl here is popular, I go there all the time.” Angela Samuels, 46 said: “I think if Aldi wants to build an Aldi, they will and people will go whether Beeston needs it or not. Aldi’s my favourite shop personally.”
