Katter's Australia Party is proposing to send repeat youth offenders between 10 and 17 years old to a 12-month outback camp for rehabilitation, and it has the backing of several north Queensland mayors.
said the camp proposal had broad backing from his fellow local government members, although no formal resolution had yet been made.
"Some people reckon it's a bit old school, but the new school's not working too good at all, so maybe a bit of old school tough love is what we need," Cr Olds said. "This recidivism is not going to stop by putting another detention centre in. Let's go the old school way — put 'em out bush."KAP leader Robbie Katter said he also supported having children locked up in police watch houses, even though it was a "terrible" thing to contemplate."It's cheap for the taxpayer, it's an effective alternative, and perhaps the first consequence these kids will ever have in the cycle of youth offending," he said.
